This raunchy horror comedy delves deep into the story of a deranged killer as he slashes his way across a soft core porno. Who will last the longest as the stiffs pile up and the killer plows through his victims?

A lot of people are simply too young to feel nostalgic about sliding a VHS (or Beta!) cassette into a machine, adjusting the tracking on the tape to get rid of the static, waiting patiently for the foreboding FBI warning to play through, and then sitting up a little straighter as the synthesizer music thumps its way out of the tiny speaker of your huge 15-inch TV set. Bonus points if it was a video your parents did not allow you to watch.

Deep Murder starts out exactly like that and it transported me right back to the days of my youth (Uncle Mike is old, kids).  Doug and Babs (Jerry O’Connell and Katie Aselton) are getting it on inside a very large house wherein the Babysitter (Jessica Parker Kennedy) is also trying to seduce the young virgin Hugh (Quinn Beswick) and his friend Jace (Chris Redd). Christopher McDonald as Richard tries to close some kind of business deal. Dr  Bunny Von Clit (Stephanie Drake) soon shows up to warn them all about the storm raging outside effectively trapping them all in the house (even though all exterior shots show a bright and sunny Southern California day as snarky counterpoint).

A murder occurs, and then another, and another and as the bodies [literally] pile up, it’s up to our ever-dwindling group of stereotypical soft core porn characters to figure out whodunnit (along with a very unhelpful Detective Cross, played by Josh Margolin).

It’s not easy to pretend to be a bad actor who is sincerely and earnestly trying to speak the crappy lines of a porn script in a believable way, but all of talented people involved here do an excellent job as porn stereotypes who are suddenly in way above their heads when the blood starts to flow (I’m sure it helps that actors Margolin band Beswick also helped write the script). The jokes, puns, double- and single-entendres come quickly (heh) and, if they don’t all land perfectly, there’s a new one to take its place right away.

But they didn’t skimp on the effects here, either. The blood definitely gets pumping and the gore, while not gratuitous or overdone, took me by surprise a few times. Plus, there’s a very apropos dildo fight. So it’s got that going for it, too.

Deep Murder was thoroughly enjoyable and made me laugh a lot. It certainly won’t win any awards or academic accolades, but it’s definitely worthy of a rental.
