Curious. I think that is the best word to describe this film from director Sergio Myers. 223 Wick follows Father John (Alexi Stavrou), an outcast priest that fights his daily nightmares, as he explores the mysteries and theories behind his visions.

223 Wick grabs you within the first monologue. It doesn’t give you much, but it leaves you wanting to know what unfolds. I have reviewed many movies on this website and I think this is the first time I have noticed prominent and well-crafted themes. That doesn’t mean a film needs super complex themes to be good, but it really added to the value in this case. I think 223 Wick brings up many points about greed, especially in religion. I don’t plan on going into the real-life implications of this, but it reminded me of some current events.

The ethics of good versus evil is also covered well when the script brings up the critical point of how does one go about changing the world by themselves? Is it still good even if you are trying to do good but are being pushed back by other institutions and entities? I think the movie’s philosophy is interesting to apply to real life.

Alexi Stravou gave the best performance with his delivery of some cold lines and very memorable speeches. I wish he had been utilized a little more, though, as there were a lot of scenes where he was just walking around and not saying anything. It was an interesting attempt to try and convey emotions that way, but I think the more dialogue would have worked better. The rest of the performances were pretty good and I liked Dawn Lafferty and Jack Dimich in their respective roles, specifically.

The technical elements were average and could have been done better. There are scenes where the CGI was a little sloppy, with the performances and music not matching up with what was happening on screen. I know it’s a low-budget movie and there probably weren’t the required resources needed to make it as perfect as possible, but I still think the filmmakers could have been more creative than what’s on display.

I don’t think the technical flaws take away anything from the big picture and I hope they have the opportunity to continue to explore this world because I’d like to see what they could do with a longer script and a bigger budget. I’m really high on 223 Wick. I loved the themes, the performances, and the story. Check this out and see if the themes are as interesting to you as they were to me.
