Terror Vault has done it again. Their new sci-fi take on the horrors of this world has landed at The San Francisco Mint with as much wit and creativity as we would expect from the producing team of Joshua Grannell (Peaches Christ) and David Mazochi of Into the Dark Productions. Lizard People, Grey (or is it gray) Aliens, The Government, Time Travel, and social commentary all get rolled up into one fantastic immersive theatrical experience that is as fun as it is provocative.

Arrival

Let’s start with the approach. We arrive at the historic San Francisco Mint and climb the daunting steps to the entrance. After checking in, and sharing our ID with the attendant, we enter the line for check-in.

Once inside, ticket holders are guided downstairs to the main activity corridor. We head to the right and arrive at the infamous FANG BANG bar.

Here ticket holders can fuel up (but not too much) on victuals and liquid courage while enjoying the pleasant drone of house music and the occasional performance.

Just down the hall is the CREEPSHOP. It is at this retail spot that visitors can take home their very own keepsakes of the evening.

Justin Cooter’s Roadhouse Bar

Guest that choose to purchase the VIP ticket can expect a bit more on their visit. to begin with you get the opt-in glow-in-the-dark necklace that lets the cast know that you want a more interactive experience. This ticket also allows entry to Justin Cooter’s Roadside Bar and Gift Shop.

The thing is that Justin’s mom, Meemaw, likes to get up and work the pole.

We venture into the gift shop and discover a literal hole in the wall that leads to all manner of photo ops.

The Show

At our designated time, our small group was asked to line up at the entrance to the show. It appeared that something very official and sinister was happening.

We were guided into a debriefing room where we were welcomed to the show and given the ground rules.  We were asked to shut off all devices that would interrupt the show with light or sound. Next, it was explained that there was a major conflict happening between extraterrestrials and mankind in which our assistance was needed. We were the recruits selected for a special mission.

We are told that Aliens are nothing new. In fact, a grey alien named Skinny Bob was one of the first friends of humanity from another world. Yet, the new green aliens, have landed and they have a plan. As mankind blithely destroys the planet and raises the temperatures, these new lizard people have infiltrated the highest echelons of government and sit in waiting as mankind dies off.

Our job is to save mankind. Not too much to ask, really. How do we do it? We are sent on an absurdly convoluted mission that spans time and space in the hopes of gaining the upper hand on the creatures that have already taken over the world.

The cast consists of Bay Area performers who raise the bar for immersive theatre. The entire ensemble is on the same page with the tone of the show and is consistently strong. That’s not to mention the creative, and oftentimes disorienting layout utilized within the historic building. This is Hollywood-level sets and lighting that matches or even rivals the quality and detail you would see at Knott’s or Universal.

Terror Vault delivers another wildly original haunt that speaks to the terrors of our times. The difference is that instead of shallow scares, we are treated to the depth of camp and commentary. Show writer Grannell has a non-to-subtle message here about the dark path being charted by right-wing extremists in the world but it’s wrapped in such an outlandish package that you can’t help but give in to the absurd fun of it all. And really, is concern about global warming and oppression such a bad thing? This is razor-sharp satire produced on the level of a world-class haunt and we are here for it.

The VIP TOUR that happened on October 5

This year, Terror Vault and HorrorBuzz teamed up for another spectacular event. We brought horror fans closer than ever to the scares with a behind-the-scenes tour of Fatal Abduction. Here haunt creators Joshua Grannell and David Mazochi led an intimate group of fans through the haunt with a lights on tour.

With all of the work lights on, Grannell and Mazochi took our group, scene-by-scene, offering commentary and insight on how things operated.

Guests were allowed to soak in the extensive detail of every scene. That’s not to mention the utterly disturbing set decoration that provoked a double take during the show.

Guests of the VIP Behind the Scenes tour presented by HorrorBuzz and Terror Vault were able to examine and explore the artistry while conducting an live Q&A with the creators of the haunt.

We want to thank Into the Dark and the Terror Vault Cast and Crew for a remarkable show and a great time.
