Colorado’s Terror in the Corn, a nationally recognized haunted attraction at Anderson Farms, is expanding beyond its infamous mile-long cornfield into the realms of video games and comic books. The new Terror in the Corn video game promises a first-person survival horror experience set in the dark and dangerous world of Raven’s Gulch. Players can look forward to an immersive, procedurally generated adventure, facing menacing creatures such as a chainsaw-wielding maniac, a giant scarecrow, and a vengeful witch. The game, featuring a soundtrack by Celldweller, will release this October on all major consoles, with a mobile version arriving soon after. It is currently available on Steam.
Developed by FreakZone Games and Metal X Entertainment, a division of Bit Bot Media, the game puts players in the role of a miner navigating the haunted cornfield with only a lantern, as they search for clues and artifacts to escape. The developers are no strangers to success; Bit Bot Media’s recent Kickstarter for The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise graphic novel raised over $1.3 million, making it the fifth most-funded graphic novel project in Kickstarter history.
The immersive experience continues with the debut of The Wells Twins, a companion comic book published by Bit Bot Media and Metal X Entertainment. Written by Joshua Viola and Sean Eads, with art by Juan Samu, the comic delves into the dark history of Raven’s Gulch. It tells the chilling tale of Charles and Mildred Wells, sinister siblings with a penchant for predation, as they prepare to open the Wells Hotel and Funeral Home. Limited collector’s editions will be available exclusively at Anderson Farms when Terror in the Corn opens for the season on September 27, with standard editions accessible online. The second issue is slated for release next Halloween season.
Michael Edwards, Operations Director for Terror in the Corn, shared his enthusiasm: “We were already familiar with Josh Viola’s body of work and knew a partnership with Bit Bot Media and FreakZone Games would result in a high-quality expansion of our attraction. The comic and video game have exceeded our expectations, and we are excited to bring our story to a broader audience.”
We spoke with Joshua Viola, co-founder of Metal X Entertainment, about the project below.
HorrorBuzz: How did the collaboration between Bit Bot Media and Terror in the Corn come about?
Joshua Viola: I got to know the Terror in the Corn team through our mutual involvement as sponsors and vendors at the Colorado Festival of Horror. Being a regular at their attraction and a big fan of what they do, we started chatting about my projects, and they really connected with the work I was doing. From there, the idea of collaborating came up naturally, and it just made sense for us to work together.
HB: Was adapting a haunted corn maze into a video game difficult or was it a natural fit? Why?
JV: It was a very natural fit. I typically attend their show 2-3 times a year, so I’m quite familiar with the attraction. The rich lore surrounding Terror in the Corn made it easy for us to envision how the haunt could be translated into different mediums. We were able to develop a pitch for both the comic and the game fairly quickly, and I was stoked they loved both ideas.
HB: What are some of the elements that you needed to include to really make it feel like players were at Terror in the Corn?
JV: Most of the credit goes to Sam Beddoes at FreakZone Games. He truly went above and beyond with this project, creating an atmosphere that’s both creepy and immersive. It perfectly captures the essence of being at the haunt. I’ve said it before, and I genuinely mean it: I really can’t decide which is scarier, the attraction or the game—it’s that good!
Visually, the game plunges you into the creepiest haunted corn maze imaginable, filled with terrifying creatures lurking in the shadows. The haunting melodies by Celldweller and the exceptional sound design enhance the overall experience, making it feel truly authentic. Plus, true to the haunt’s style, the game is packed with effective jump scares that will keep players on the edge of their seats.
HB: What are some of the monsters that pursue players on their journey?
JV: All of the creatures in the game are pulled directly from the characters at the haunted attraction. They’re all essentially serving as minions of the witch Dumitra. Each one is unique and brings its own terrifying presence to the game. We’ve got a possessed doll, a giant scarecrow, a chainsaw-wielding maniac, and more! Each creature has its own distinct method of stalking you, adding to the overall tension and excitement as you navigate through the cornfields.
HB: Will there be any in-person activations at the actual maze for players of the game?
JV: You can pick up the Terror in the Corn comic we created right at the attraction, including a limited edition version that fans will love. As for the game, we don’t have anything available yet, but we’ve talked about the possibility, and there’s a chance we might see something next year. Stay tuned for updates!
HB: What is the perfect way to play this game? Lights on or off? Headphones or sound system?
JV: Lights off and the volume cranked all the way up (headphones or sound system)—this game is designed as an atmospheric experience! We really hope players immerse themselves fully and feel the terror. It’s all about creating a chilling environment that keeps you on the edge of your seat!
Stay tuned for more updates as Terror in the Corn prepares to take its terrifying legacy to digital screens and comic panels this fall.
