Epic Pictures Group has announced the acquisition of a new true-crime film slate that will delve into the real-life stories of some of America’s most notorious serial killers. Directed by Chad Ferrin, the films in this collection—Ed Kemper, Dorothea, The Devil’s Disciple, and The Golden State Killer—aim to bring audiences a disturbing yet factual look at the crimes and the complex psyches of these infamous individuals.
The first film, Ed Kemper, has wrapped production. It recounts the life of Edmund Kemper, known as “The Co-ed Killer,” who committed his first murders at 15 and went on to take the lives of eight more victims, including his mother, in the early 1970s. The film stars Brandon Kirk, Susan Priver, Brinke Stevens, Lew Temple, and Cassandra Gava. Co-written by Ferrin and Stephen Johnston, Ed Kemper will mark the beginning of Epic Pictures’ Serial Killer Collection under its DREAD label.
Dorothea, currently in production, tells the story of Dorothea Puente, a convicted murderer who turned her boarding house into a hidden graveyard. The film follows a young journalist’s journey as he uncovers Puente’s dark history, revealing her life of crime fueled by abuse and manipulation. Susan Priver, Lew Temple, and Ezra Buzzington lead the cast, with Ferrin handling both writing and directing.
Additional projects in development include The Devil’s Disciple, focused on the hunt for the “Night Stalker,” Richard Ramirez, and The Golden State Killer, which explores Joseph DeAngelo’s reign of terror across California. Epic Pictures CEO Patrick Ewald promises that this collection will go beyond traditional horror, exploring “the terror of real-life monsters” and offering an intense, psychological perspective on true crime.
