We’ve all had a friend like Scott. You know the kind. He is the guy that gets on everyone’s very last nerve until you have reached your limit. The type of friend you would kill if you had your chance. In Killer Friends, by first time writer/director Zach Noe Towers we meet just such a friend and fall in love/hate with him during a camping trip in the mountains.
We first meet three friends in a car, Jill (Jenna-Lee Carreiro), Heather (Peggy Sinnott), and Bryan (Dave Racki) just before a camping trip. Jill and Bryan plan to kill her roommate starring Scott (Zach Noe Towers). He is an insufferable know-it-all with a penchant for catty comments and cruel behavior. Initially hesitant, Heather is reminded, in a very funny bit, just how insensitive Scott can be. Before you can say “Rocky Mountain High” the three are off to a remote campground filled with deadly possibilities.
Killer Friends is a well-produced, very witty, screwball, horror-comedy that should be seen. Zach Noe Towers knows how to showcase his talent for madcap comedy and creates a farcical frame on which to swing. The supporting cast is a lot of fun too, with Carreiro’s Jill and Sinnott’s Heather having wonderful moments of comic frustration. It was surprising to me how well-produced the short is too. Some of the shots are beautifully done and the score perfectly underscores the lunacy on screen.
The short is not without a few problems though. While the journey was fun, the ending really could have used a little more of a punch. We see these friends struggle a spectacular comic menace and it all sort of just ends. I also really would have love to see Racki’s Bryan have more of a running thread with the evil Scott the way the other two leads did too. Regardless of these minor quibbles, the journey is the best part of this trip.
Killer Friends is written, produced, and directed by Zach Noe Towers. Producers: Tina Carbone, Mark Brostoff, and Jenna-Lee Carreiro. Cinematography by James Sielaff, Makeup FX by Christina Chapman, Editing by Morgan Pritchard, and Music by Jasha Klebe.
The film will be playing the festival circuit of the next year and is definitely something you should chase down. For our Los Angeles Friends, the movie will be making its West Coast debut on June 8th at 5pm at the prestigious TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, CA as part of the Dances With Films, film festival.
