Taking a page from Hitchcock’s Rear Window, with the striking visual bleakness of Cronenberg, Observance is a journey into the mind of a man who experiences a violent mental breakdown following being assigned to spy on a woman across the street. Reluctantly returning to work after the death of his son, and with his personal and financial life in turmoil, private detective Parker takes on what seems to be a simple job, to observe a woman from his window. As he continues his work, however, things begin to grow sinister, as he slowly becomes aware that the derelict building he is in has a dark presence which slowly threatens to consume him, driving him deeper into his one personal hell. In the same vein of Hitchcock’s classic, what initially begins as simple voyeurism gives way to something more insidious as this assignment proves to be one he’ll never forget.
Already receiving considerable critical acclaim from Bloody Disgusting and Indiewire, among others, Observance is a must-see for anyone that has an appreciation for the subtle, slowly-building tension that so much modern horror lacks. The release is set for August 2nd on DVD and Blu-ray, as well as streaming exclusively on Vimeo, and will hit most other major VOD outlets beginning October 11th. The DVD and Blu-ray also include the bonus Preface to Observance and artsploitation trailers.
