In Presley Paras’ new horror short, the two titular characters named Buffalo and Trout are hired to rob a gang of white supremacists. The two female addicts of unregulated narcotics seem at first to be utterly invincible, likened to that of superhero power, but only so long as their high lasts.

There’s not a whole lot in the way of a plot, Buffalo and Trout cuts right to the trigger-happy point almost abruptly. Despite this flaw, there is a lot of action to make up for the shorts lagging corners. In addition, Paras does a great job of conveying a genuine love between the two female leads, prior to the film’s deadly end.

Several uses of drug fever-dream sequences that belong in the directors cut of Midsommer pad the runtime as you approach the short’s climax. These momentary bursts of color play over an intensely dark action centerpiece that does more visual spectacle rather than guiding the audience cohesively through a house assault. In the end, we’re left wondering whether Buffalo and Trout are some kind of superhuman fighting machines from the Rob Zombie catalog, or if the whole thing was simply the ecstasy of the high.
