Indie publisher Katnappe, and new studio and developer Genius Slackers, have announced that their upcoming horror game, What Happened, is expected to arrive on PC via Steam this July, with consoles following at a later date. Having been in development for three years, What Happened explores the strife of anxiety and depression, while searching for true hope.
Synopsis: Fans of first-person psychological horror will guide main character Stiles through a dimension of his own mind, where he must escape both his real and imagined demons. During this fight for freedom, players must liberate Stiles from the devilish influences leading him on a path to self-destruction. Within this mental realm, players will find unforgiving puzzles that must be solved, and may pull on invisible strings that determine Stiles’ fate. This adventure demonstrates the capabilities of unity, empathy, and determination to reach asylum in Stiles’ own mind.
The trailer introduces
What Happened to players with a perfectly-lengthed preview of what is to come. Beginning with flashes between Stiles’ reality and illusions of him drowning, with demeaning thoughts such as “
Shut up!” screaming in his head, the message is clear. The game takes place in a high school, where the hallways are gruesome and barricaded, symbolizing his feelings of being trapped in his own mind. The graphics are smooth, as we see Stiles’ walking down one of these hallways, only to turn around and see enemies, causing the player to immediately flee. The dark components throughout the school are contrasted by the bright light seeping in through the windows, and gives the players a strong desire to escape to the light at the end of the tunnel as quickly as possible.
What Happened will be available to play on Steam this July 2020, with consoles following later. There is no price listed quite yet, but having been a passion project from the creators, we are sure this game will be a Summer hit.
