When it comes to films about childbirth, what else is there to tell? You could say that there’s nothing else to demonstrate because all has been done. Blood Born comes kicking in with its own crafty way showing its creativity.

A couple enlists the help of a modern magical foundation as a last resort to conceive a baby after trying several times on their own. The foundation sends a doula to help them succeed but, while she stays with them, the couple begins to see strange details and have their doubts about everything they are doing to get what they want most, starting with the gestation process since it only lasts a week. Are they being lucky or scammed for a horrible evil purpose?

Blood Born is the kind of movie where everything seems depressing at first. It splashes itself with some comedy while it takes a turn into suspense to later arrive into terror after a satisfying journey. It has a slow build-up but it is very much worth the wait for the intriguing final act. The most interesting thing about the whole film is that even though you think everything will go down the same tragic path has it has for other couples in the film, everything is completely different for the main couple due to their actions— it shows two possible endings halfway leaving the viewer in the middle of a guessing game that will be solved during the last five minutes of the film.

The script isn’t impressive but the story is good enough for it to come into play. Perhaps with a deeper dialogue the story would have a greater impact than it already has on its own and would achieve a phenomenal effect on the viewer leaving a moral about decision-making, and a memory that will be part of their nightmares for a long time. And even though the script is not spectacular, there is an interesting development of each character. It is noticeable when characters go from one belief to another in a matter of seconds but the writer interposes a means to justify their actions and reactions. The only sketchy thing is that most of the characters don’t stick to their new views. Instead, they go back to the moment they didn’t know best and act like they didn’t discover the relevant piece of information that could save their lives— as if there were many vehicles to go back and forth while spinning around to eventually arrive to their destination.

Blood Born sucks in the best possible way— it’s entertaining, weird and thrilling. Even when it doesn’t scream terror from beginning to end, it is quite scary to see how far would anyone go even when they’re seeing the consequences of what they most desire.
