At the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Sundance Institute recognized the importance of science in cinema by presenting the juried Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize to “SALLY,” directed by Cristina Costantini. The documentary explores the life and legacy of astronaut and physicist Sally Ride, who made history as the first American woman to travel to space.

During the ceremony, three additional artist grants were awarded to emerging projects emphasizing scientific themes. Ella Gale received the Sloan Episodic Fellowship for “Greenwashers,” Katla Sólnes earned the Sloan Development Fellowship for “Eruption,” and Brittany Wang received the Sloan Commissioning Grant for “Thin Ice.” Collectively, these grants totaled $84,000 in cash awards.

Before the reception, Costantini took part in “The Big Conversation: Breaking Barriers,” a Sloan Foundation–sponsored Beyond Film panel focused on the scientific and societal challenges faced by experts in various technical fields. Amanda Kelso, Acting CEO of Sundance Institute, and Doron Weber, Vice President and Program Director at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the two organizations to support and showcase work at the intersection of art and science.

“SALLY” received a $25,000 cash prize and was chosen by a jury of film and science professionals, reinforcing the Foundation’s commitment to science-driven narratives. The initiative marks a continued effort by both the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Sundance Institute to champion creators who delve into crucial scientific and technological topics.
