At some point in time, every gamer has either played or watched a playthrough of any game with some type of mod being used to either enhance gameplay, add in something new, improve quality of life, or even just have some laughs. Now, as 2020 marks the 10-year anniversary for the launch of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Frictional Games has announced that the cult classic horror game is now available as Open Source.

“What does this mean?” you may be asking yourself. Well, this basically means that the entire game code is now available to the public, which includes all of the editor code, as well. While the games will still be available for purchase on online stores, users will now be able to use the source however they please as long as they adhere to the GPL3 license.

This is the case for both The Dark Descent and A Machine For Pigs, by the way. Both links are included below for anybody interested!

Also, just as a disclaimer: Amnesia: The Dark Descent is still fully owned by Frictional Games, just like it always has been.

“Modding has been a huge part of Amnesia,” explains Thomas Grip, creative director at Frictional Games. “For instance, over the years The Dark Descent has accumulated over a thousand mods and addons on ModDB. This flood of user content has been amazing to see, and we are extremely grateful for the whole community. It is time we give something back!”

This bold move is incredibly exciting for anyone who enjoys either creating mods, or even just playing them, as we can expect to see an increase in creativity and inventive ideas.
