Do you like horror movies? While there are plenty of horror fans all over the world, not everyone’s a fan. In fact, some films, like The Conjuring, are just plain scary – they’re over the boundary for a lot of people!

But if you want to watch a fairly scary film and have a few laughs to boot, try these 4 trashy but good horror movies!

House of Wax

House Of Wax (2005) - Official Trailer (HD)

House of Wax is possibly the cheesiest of all trashy horror movies. It follows a group of teenagers (including a young Paris Hilton and Chat Michael Muray) who stumble upon a wax museum while on their way to a football game. They decide to stay overnight in a woodland area and their car is broken by a stranger who arrives and watches them closely.

They are eventually taken to a ghost town to get a new fan belt, but they accidentally stumble upon a wax museum in the area. They discover that these wax figures are the corpses of people and have to fight to not become the next wax exhibit. Some of the other characters end up stumbling upon the House of Wax and seeing one of their friends covered in wax, unable to move.

Slowly, each character becomes a victim of the House of Wax, and the majority of the film is a ridiculous fight to not become another waxwork. The acting is, to be honest, terrible, but it’s unlikely you’ll be too scared at this because it’s such an unrealistic situation! It received pretty bad reviews from the critics, but we think it’s a classic example of a so bad it’s good horror film.

The Haunted Casino

Far away from usual films about gambling, which usually depict glitz and glamour a la Casino Royale, slot-machines and other popular casino games are at the forefront of this ghost story. Along with ghosts, obviously. Protagonist Matthew inherits an old casino from his uncle who has recently passed.

Matthew, together with a group of friends, visits the casino, and finds that it’s haunted by angry ghosts who were in fact past employees murdered by his uncle. The spirits want revenge, and as the uncle has already died, they instead set about haunting the nephew.

The reviews of The Haunted Casino have a very “so bad it’s good” air about them, with people saying that it’s not a film for anyone who’s interested in a serious horror, but for those who want a cheesy film that’s not going to be too gory, it might just be a perfect match.

Leprechaun

Leprechaun (1993) - HD Trailer [1080p]

Did you know that way before Jennifer Aniston starred in FRIENDS, she was featured in a horror film called Leprechaun?!

This film also features Warwick Davis, an Irish leprechaun who thinks that an American family has stolen his pot of gold. The leprechaun then haunts the family which in turn tries to locate his gold.

As you can imagine by the somewhat absurd plot, this isn’t a very serious horror film! Davis added quite a lot of comedy, so it fits into the trashy but good horror movie genre. However, during reshoots, the editors added some gore to try to appeal to more horror fans.

Shaun of the Dead

Shaun of the Dead | Original Trailer [HD] | Coolidge Corner Theatre

Ok, this one’s actually trying to take the mick out of cheesy horror movies. It follows Shaun, an electronics salesman who breaks up with his girlfriend and doesn’t enjoy his life. Then, a zombie apocalypse happens in London. Shaun and his friend, Ed, have to fight the zombies but decide to locate his ex-girlfriend and mum, head to the local pub, The Winchester, and “wait for this to all blow over”.

However, on the way to The Winchester, they experience people who have already been bitten by zombies, including his stepdad Phillip, who starts turning into a zombie himself. What follows is a hilarious, and sometimes even a little sad, depiction of people turning into zombies and the ultimate lock-in in The Winchester.

This film was so popular because it was a complete mick-take of other “so bad they’re good” horror movies. It’s become a staple, enjoyed by people all over the world, but particularly loved by Brits due to the number of one-liners and elements of UK culture (such as going to the pub and waiting for it to all blow over!).

If you want a trashy horror movie that knows it’s bad and doesn’t take itself too seriously, this is the one to watch!

Sometimes you aren’t in a mood for straight-up horror. Maybe you don’t like super scary movies or avoid films that can feel too relatable to your life. But, if you still enjoy the horror genre, then check out these cheesy horror movies – they’re nice to watch if you fancy something lighthearted.
