Cue the blood-curdling screams! Shudder, the horror-based streaming network, has released a theatrical poster and red-band trailer for its latest film Blood Quantum. In true zombie film fashion, we follow a group’s struggle to fight off an ever-growing zombie hoard. How much blood must be spilled before the surviving few can conquer the undead? Grab your preferred zombie killing weapon and let’s find out!
Synopsis: The dead are coming back to life outside the isolated Mi’gmaq reserve of Red Crow, except for its Indigenous inhabitants who are immune to the zombie plague. Traylor, the tribal sheriff, must protect his son’s pregnant girlfriend, apocalyptic refugees, and reserve riff raff from the hordes of walking white corpses.
Dynamic and visually striking, this trailer is teeming with blood, gore, grotesque zombies, and some cheeky one-liners. It looks like a “good ol’ zombie movie” that any fan of the undead is sure to enjoy. But what stands out the most about the film is the parallel made with our world today. A small group of First Nations people battles a world trying to swallow them whole. One line in the trailer really stood out, “Who says we’re immune..maybe the earth just forgot about us”. So while this film looks like an action-packed zombie slay fest it also sends a message, and it’s one the world needs to hear.
Written and directed by Mi’gmaq filmmaker Jeff Barnaby Blood Quantum boasts an indigenous cast. The film stars Michael Greyeyes (Fear the Walking Dead), Elle-Maija Tailfeathers (The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open), and Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant). Expect to see Blood Quantum released to theaters in Canada via Elevation Pictures on March 27. The film will have a limited release in the US this spring before coming to Shudder in the US and UK.
