When Cyberpunk 2077 was first released back in December of 2020, the years and years of anticipation had finally reached the climax – just to be met with mixed reviews and harsh criticism from players on all fronts. Littered with bugs, broken gameplay mechanics, and problematic representations, it seemed as if CD Projekt Red had their work cut out for them in order to sway public opinion in favor of the action RPG.

So, now in early 2022 and after the major turning point that is the 1.5 update, how is Cyberpunk 2077 now?

PLOT

Set in the megacity of Night City, players take on the role of V, a mercenary to be fully cosmetically customized by the player themself. After choosing between three different life paths – Nomad, Streetkid, or Corpo – V will somehow end up in Night City with new friend and partner, Jackie. A variety of different missions and adventures will ensue, determined by your origin story, and will kickstart their journey through the crime-ridden city.

GAMEPLAY

Described as an action RPG, Cyberpunk 2077 is a great example of an open world from the first person perspective. With such a vast character customization, while not being overly complicated, and the ability to assign specific attributes, players can build their character to their strengths.

The stat categories consist of Body, Intelligence, Reflexes, Technical, and Cool – all of which influence and manipulate the gameplay. Adding in new dialogue, strength in their moves, ability to counter an enemy’s attacks, and so much more, these statistics are vital, especially in the beginning.

PROS

The latest update 1.5 implemented a large amount of changes that players have been requesting – if not begging for – since launch. Performance issues, additional content, gameplay adjustments, quality of life improvements, and so much more.

Most notably for many might just be the ability to alter V’s appearance by using the mirror in their apartment. While it may seem minor to many on the outside, it was a massive letdown to realize it hadn’t been added from the start.

With such a massive list of changes, it now appears to consumers that CD Projekt Red still cares about Cyberpunk 2077, giving fans of the game a glimmer of hope for the future of the game’s lifespan.

CONS

The greatest thing about this update is also its downfall, in an odd way. The myriad of improvements made in this update bring Cyberpunk 2077 to finally rise amongst its competitors, however, as it’s been over a year since launch, the hype has inevitably faltered. Of course, it’s absolutely worth another playthrough with these massive upgrades, and I was ecstatic to have been able to return to Night City.

VERDICT

If you hadn’t already purchased Cyberpunk 2077, now may be the best time. While the catastrophic launch left a mark on gaming history, CDPR seems to have redeemed themselves, if only a bit late.
