Last year, horror movie fans were treated to a plethora of high-quality and creative films that delivered on multiple different levels. At the box office domestically, 13 films grossed over $20 million, and 20 broke the $10 million mark. Among the highlights were Late Night with the Devil, Immaculate The Substance, Speak No Evil, Terrifier 3, Nosferatu, and Longlegs.

Throw in the likes of Heretic, MaXXXine, and Smile 2, and you have a collection of unique horrors that were well-written, well-made, and hit the right marks for horror. Apparently, the top 55 films combined for a domestic box office of $870 million with over 80 million tickets sold. It was a great setup to get more and more people jittering for extra horror outings. In 2025, there’ll be plenty of ways to explore the genre further.

Cinema Slate Looks Stacked

28 YEARS LATER – Official Trailer (HD)
Much like in 2024, the 2025 cinematic slate for the horror genre looks stacked. It’s not just about big names being involved, but there are plenty of unique and interesting ideas being put out there by the smaller studios that continue to champion the genre – primarily A24 and Blumhouse. In March, we have three potential hits on the horizon with the Eiza González-led sci-fi horror Ash, followed by The Woman in the Yard, and then Death of a Unicorn.

On the latter, when A24 put out its first trailer, there was very much an aura of goofy horror comedy with quick quips from the social elite of the film and, of course, Paul Rudd. The second trailer leans almost entirely into the creepy horror side of a creature feature. So, who knows what the end product will actually entail! Before we even hit the middle of the year, we’ve got some potential blockbusters joining the slate.

With possible sleeper hits like Drop, Sinners, and Until Dawn in between, we’ll be getting Final Destination: Bloodlines for some fate-determined gruesomeness and M3GAN 2.0 to bring back that creepy doll. Also arriving before July is 28 Years Later. Quietly said to be part one of a two part series, it’ll build on the highly-praised story of 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. Horror fans are going to enjoy a consistent slate of intriguing horror flicks this year.

Working Out What to Watch in Between

ASH | Official Trailer | Shudder | RLJE
Horror is one of the most prolific genres, and with the rise of streaming platforms like Shudder, as well as Netflix to a lesser extent, it can be very easy to miss some great films. For many, this was the case with Late Night with the Devil last year. The straight-to-Shudder release in most markets could have easily resulted in whole droves of people missing out on this creative gem. So, to get in among the hidden gems you might have missed, you can turn to the roulette feature of the movie reviews and rankings site Reelgood.

Loaded with scores and info on horror movies, among all of the other genres, Reelgood specializes in pointing you to where you can stream each film or just watch it for free in your country. Its most novel feature is Movie Roulette. Roulette, from its table origins in Paris to online roulette, is a game dictated by chance, with this simplicity giving it widespread appeal. The process is to spin the wheel, drop the ball in, and see where it lands. Being wholly randomized, all numbers on the wheel have an equal chance of landing, which explains its enduring popularity.

Reelgood takes this formula, without the chance to bet on lucky numbers, and adapts it to finding films on streaming services and associated platforms. Best of all, you can tailor the wheel. In roulette, you play with 37 pockets, but with Reelgood’s Movie Roulette, you can adjust the filters to only cover your select streaming services, the genre, whether it’s a film or show, and films of a certain Reelgood score or higher.

After a superb 2024 for the genre, horror fans can look forward to keeping the good times rolling in 2025. Not only is the cinema set to be stacked with fun flicks, but there’s even a streamlined way to explore the vast back catalog.
