JFI Productions brought their flagship show, CREEP, back for the Halloween season, but this year, they teamed up with the CBS television show GHOSTS to bring a pseudo tie-in to life. The good news for folks (like me) who haven’t seen the tv show is that it is its own separate thing.
Of note, however, is that this branding opportunity allowed some more money to be injected into the show, which is apparent at every turn. They took great care to add enhanced effects, incredible decor, and so much to a show that continues to impress no matter what. While some enhancements might not be noticeable to the most, they do enhance the overall experience.
The experience begins by checking into a gorgeous “bed and breakfast”. This home acts as the lounge for the show, allowing you to check out the living room, take photos at the (ever so popular) photo booth, and watch a recap of GHOSTS on the TV over the mantle. There are some excellent little touches, like the lights reacting to the actions on the TV, the radio going off at certain times, and just little things that draw you closer into the world.
But as mentioned, once the experience begins, the world of GHOSTS fades away as venture into a different one for CREEP’s take on the subject. As in year’s past, CREEP is filled with vignettes that follow an overall through line to tie them together. Obviously, the theme this year was “ghosts”, as we spend the show visiting CREEP’s version of the dearly departed residents and hearing their story.
And what stories they had to tell. There was everything from love taken too soon (with a twist on who loves who), a tall man in a hat, and even a 1920s prohibition party that, of course, ended in disaster. Each scene was plotted out expertly in their space, weaving through walls, side stairs, and passages, making the house seem bigger than it was. In fact, the creaking floorboards and crumbling walls of the home gave an extra layer of believability to the story, with the house becoming another character in the story.
For the most part, I enjoyed the vignettes, as the show’s twisting story allowed us to confront the ghosts that reside in it. Many scenes had the same heavy hitting, emotional impact and underlying creep factor of the show’s past. However, there were a few moments that seemed somewhat out of place, and more at home at a traditional haunt. Perhaps this was intentional; harkening back to the early days of ghost stories and mysticism, but alas, it did not work for me. However, together with the overall show, these are minor quibbles…if given the chance, I’d gladly live in that house with all of the ghosts!
As they do every year, JFI Productions excels at their casting. Each and every member of the cast was incredible, drawing us into their story, and really making us feel their emotions. While regular attendees will see some of the usual suspects, I was delighted to see some new faces inhabiting the home. This was refreshing, as adding some new blood (no pun intended) gave the show a new energy. The cast always mesh well together, and seeing the old and new working hand in hand like a well-oiled spooky machine made my heart happy.
For those of us waiting for CREEP to make its return, rejoice! After much speculation, I am happy to report that if you loved it in the past, you’re going to love it again. If you’re looking for something to add to your spooky season, CREEP x Ghosts is a must-see.
