SeaWorld San Diego has kicked off their annual Halloween celebration known as Howl-O-Scream. The event, now in its fifth year of fear invites locals to test their mettle against an opening SCAREmony, a stage show, four Vile Vignettes, seven scare zones, three coasters, and five mazes. Here we will share with you what you can expect from the event along with walkthroughs of the mazes and some observations. Howl-O-Scream runs select nights now through November 1.
Howl-O-Scream is a separate ticketed event from daytime operations. As the daytime guests trickle out of the front gate, Howl-O-Scream ticket holders are asked to line up outside of security, just to the right of the entrance. Soon enough, haunt guests are admitted through a separate entrance, passed through security, and allowed in. At this point, you can head off into the holding area for the opening SCAREmony or, if you purchased any upgrades, you would make a sharp left to guest relations to pick up your credentials.

Opening SCAREmony
Every haunt event needs an opening moment. Here at SeaWorld a carnival barker greets the crowd and things seem normal. Then, of course, things get dark. Clowns invade the area and chaos erupts in a frenzy of laughter, chainsaws, and screams. The event is now open.
Monster Stomp
The fan favorite show Monster Stomp is back to present a Jack The Ripper-inspired musical journey. With a mix of modern music and dance, what plays out on stage is a well produced, overall entertaining show.
Scare Zones
SeaWorld San Diego’s Howl-O-Scream offers a whopping total of 7 different scare zones. While that might seem great, there are only a few that really stand out. They should focus on quality rather than quantity here and deliver something really effective. What is here is adequate for the passive haunt visitor but not notable.
- All Hallow’s Harvest
- Red Moon Revelry
- Deadly Toys

Vile Vignettes
Throughout the event there are mini performances called Vile Vignettes. depending on where you are, you will be treated to skits and interactions with the likes of Dolly Delightful or Misfortune and you can experience Summon the Spirits and Dark Magic. I will say that the Vile Vignettes is an effective, well done addition that really gives guests a chance to slow down and immerse themselves in the Halloween fun.

Mazes
SeaWorld San Diego Howl-O-Scream offers a collection of five spooky walkthroughs.
Area 64: Alien Outbreak
Venture into a government facility where the aliens have taken over.
Circus of the Damned
Easily the best maze at the event, Circus of the damned is a lively, colorful, and fun maze to navigate. The performers I encountered were full of energy and ready to scare. Yes, the circus tropes are played out, but they sell it.
Death Water Bayou Awakening
Journey deep into the back waters of the Louisiana Bayou with Death Water Bayou Awakening. Touted as a “reimagining” Death Water Bayou Awakening feels more like a rearrangement than anything. Regardless, what is here is entertaining enough, with the actors, again, selling it.
Nightmare Experiment Sweet DreamzZz
Once a relaxation retreat, the new storyline here is that a new sleep aid has been developed that has horrible side effects. We didn’t pick any of that up on our visit, but there were a handful of moments that worked well.
Simon’s Slaughterhouse
The meat is a little gamey at Simon’s Slaughterhouse. Enter, if you dare, Simon’s chaotic realm of meat loving madness for a factory tour you may hope to forget. The weakest maze in the roster, Slaughterhouse needs work. The talent is hit or miss, no in between. The concept is expired and should be thrown out.
I would love to see something new here next year. This maze is located at the far end of Howl-O-Scream so our advice is to hit this one first before the crowds get to it.
The Verdict
For its fifth year, SeaWorld San Diego’s Howl-O-Scream digs its heels in as a regional haunt. More of a beginner theme park haunt, Howl-O-Scream San Diego is the perfect place to introduce the young ones to the concept of haunts, and scary fun.

You can grab your tickets here. Upgrades are available and we would honestly recommend the Front Line Fear Extreme for $49.99 that gives you one-time front of line access to all five mazes and Arctic Rescue, Electric Eel, and Emperor, the three exceptional coasters operating during the event.
Bon Voyage!
