Dark Horse Comics has announced that Mike Mignola, the legendary creator of Hellboy, will be teaming up with novelist Christopher Golden for a new five-issue comic book series called Lady Baltimore! The series will feature art by Bridgit Connell, colors by Michelle Madsen, and covers designed by the Hugo award-winning Abigail Larson. The new series takes place 13 years after Baltimore, the Red Kingdom and centers on heroine Sofia Valk as she fights monsters at the dawn of World War II.
For those unfamiliar with the Baltimore series, author Christopher Golden says not to fear: “LADY BALTIMORE is the start of something big and unexpected…The series springs from the pages of the BALTIMORE comics and novel, but it has a different sensibility and a dynamic new lead protagonist. It’s perfect for new readers, who can start with issue 1 and not miss a beat, while longtime fans will be thrilled to see how the BALTIMORE mythos evolves, as some familiar faces encounter brand new characters and fresh terrors.”
Artist Bridgit Connell also shines a light on what to expect from the new series: “I love the story and the hero that is Lady Baltimore. On the surface, she’s this kick-ass heroine who gets the job done, but underneath it all is the turmoil revolving around learning how to carry the weight and legacy of her new title…as an artist, it’s a ton of fun for me to help create all these unique covens of evil witches and cool new monsters (like those creeptastic harpies) that’ll be causing serious chaos throughout the series.”
Unique covens of witches and cool new monsters definitely sound worth our time! Lady Baltimore is set to release in the summer, with the first issue appearing on shelves and digital storefronts on June 10, 2020.
