Auggie wakes up handcuffed to a chair. She has no idea where she is or why she is there. She screams for help. Suddenly, the computer on the desk opposite her comes to life and there, watching her, is a familiar-looking clown with red swirls on his cheeks. He wants to play a game.
Did I mention there’s a hacksaw near Auggie? There is. Did I also mention Auggie is a puppet? She is.
And that’s how Sarah Stephenson‘s quick and funny fan film parody of the Saw franchise takes off. At only six minutes long, it’s a breezy little joke of a short, but when the punchline came, I laughed out loud. It caught me off guard and I admired the sleight-of-hand. Very funny.
Sure, it’s very low budget. And, sure, the dialogue is sometimes hard to decipher. And, sure, I wish there was more gore. Puppet gore is funny. But it does what it set out to do. Brava, Sarah Stephenson.
I don’t know what the director’s plans are for Auggie, but I hope we see more of her in future shorts taking on other horror film franchises. That would be fun. Auggie VS Leatherface. Auggie VS Michael Myers. Auggie VS Ghostface.
I’m in.
