Sundance Film Festival 2025 – Going to the hospital as a patient isn’t exactly a pleasant experience. It’s even scarier when you’re a kid. In the short animated film Bunnyhood, young Bobby’s trip to the hospital transforms into nightmare fuel. Bobby’s anxiety manifests into vicious creatures.
The short was directed and animated by Mansi Maheshwari, who also voices Bobby. Initially, Bobby’s mom, voiced by Nina Wadia, promises that they’re just going to a local burger restaurant. Looking forward to this, Bobby eagerly hops in the car, only to realize she’s going to the hospital. Yes, indeed, mom lied, but it was the only way to get her daughter to the hospital. Once there, Bobby’s anxiety overwhelms. Nurses and doctors turn into all kinds of creatures, namely monstrous bunnies with huge, sharp teeth. Human voices morph into a cacophony of creepy sounds. Maheshwari and writers Anna Moore and James Davis really crafted quite the short film. Bobby’s trip to the hospital to have her appendix removed becomes one horrifying experience.
The hand-drawn animation looks really cool, too. The moment Bobby arrives at the hospital, the animation reflects Bobby’s anxiety. Everything becomes scary to this younger character. There’s even a moment when Bobby’s appendix becomes a character, voiced by Jose Prats. It begs Bobby not to let the doctors cut it out, but alas, even that can’t be prevented. This is such a strange and odd film, with several memorable sequences.
Bunnyhood turns a trip to the hospital to have an appendix removed into a pure horror movie. This film focuses on the anxiety surrounding medical procedures and creates memorable monsters over that relatable fear. The animation really enhances the frights.
