Housewife is one of those short films that left me wanting more. I’d love to see this deliciously bloody short turned into a series or a feature film. It simply feels like there’s a lot more of this world to play in, especially pertaining to the monster.
The short stars Shannon Collis as Julia. One day, Julia pulls out a dusty old dollhouse and cuts her finger on it. This conjures a primordial monster simply known as Housewife, voiced by Miranda Parkin, who’s credited with creating the character. Kudos absolutely must be given to the Housewife’s look. She certainly resembles a 1950s housewife, with her conservative dress and white apron, but her head is a dollhouse with open doors. It’s weird, strange, and oddly effective. Housewife, however, isn’t some docile thing that stays in the kitchen. No, in one scene, she brutally kills the mailman and packs some of his organs in a brown paper lunch bag.
Housewife feels like a teaser for something larger. As stated, this could really work well as a YouTube series, or even a feature-length film. I’d like to know more about Julia, for instance. In this case, she sort of takes a backseat to Housewife. In a short that’s under five minutes, the characters aren’t given much time. Additionally, I’d love to know more about the forgotten dollhouse Julia discovers and why it summons this bizarre monster. And, of course, I’d absolutely love to see more of Housewife. What a cool, inventive, and creepy monster.
Housewife is one compelling short film. It’s a five-minute appetizer that left me wanting a full meal. This world and its monster absolutely deserve to be explored more. Here’s hoping that the creators plan to turn this into a web series, a longer short, or even a feature-length film. I certainly wouldn’t mind watching Housewife go on an even more gruesome killing spree.
