Beyond Chicago 2026 – Marriage is a lot of hard work, and sometimes it’s easier to just end it all. The couple in Over Your Dead Body decides to do just that. However, instead of heading to divorce court, they try to kill each other in this vicious comedic thriller. The film, based on I onde dager by Tommy Wirkola, Nick Ball, and John Niven, gleefully swerves into many genres. However, it stands ten bloody toes down when it comes to blood and violence, which is why it’s hard to be mad at it.

Dan (Jason Segel) and Lisa (Samara Weaving) are in a marriage that is well past the expiration date. Neither of them is where they want to be in their careers. They also have a massive amount of debt, Lisa is having an affair, and their sex life died a quiet death years ago. So, they decide to head to Dan’s dad’s remote cabin under the false pretense of a romantic getaway. In actuality, they have both been laying the groundwork to kill each other.

This first act is delightful enough and allows Segel and Weaving to remind audiences why we love them. There is so much charm and charisma as they annoy each other and mine this dark comedy for every laugh. One of the favorite scenes in the theater is a scene when they are simply sitting at a table trying to outdo each other while arguing. You can almost see the 1980s romcom of it all and wonder if Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan were somewhere on this pitch deck. Then things escalate to gleefully bloody high places that result in Weaving doing what she does best. She’s the reigning queen of violent horror comedies for a reason, and, luckily, Segel seems down to try to match her freak.

Right when Over Your Dead Body begins to feel like the joke has gone on for too long, we get some very welcome complications. Dan and Lisa’s fight to the death is put on the back burner when three fugitives enter the scene. Todd (Keith Jardine), Pete (Timothy Olyphant), and Allegra (Juliette Lewis) have been hiding in the cabin. Their plan to remain hidden is ruined after Todd takes a stray bullet in the ass when Dan and Lisa’s rifle goes off. The trio brings a Coen Brothers levity to the situation that is hard to deny. Lewis and Olyphant are possibly having the most fun on screen and are a fun mirror to our central couple. The trio of outlaws forces Lisa and Dan to work together, and they begin to rekindle something similar to what they once had.

This cast forces us to lock in even when it feels like the movie has overstayed its welcome. Even the side characters with minimal screentime help keep Over Your Dead Body lively. We all know a project like this is only as strong as its weakest ensemble member, and luckily, everyone is on top of their game.  The director Jorma Taccone has an embarrassment of riches and knows when to get out of the way. Taccone also has an eye for bloody chaos, which leads to some horrifically decadent deaths. This film is truly a lot of fun, even if it feels like it doesn’t need the full runtime.

Most of the concerns about Over Your Dead Body are script-related. There are a lot of Harry Potter references, making it feel a little dated. However, it raises the question of whether there is another pop culture touchstone that so many people would easily grab onto. While there has to be a way to get around the TERF in the room, it does pose an interesting challenge. Another thing that will raise some alarms is the prolonged threat of anal rape being played for laughs. However, that’s not exclusively on the writers, Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney, who adapted this version. In the post-film Q&A, Taccone mentioned he asked to put that scene back into this version. He did not mention what the alternative was, but I’m curious. He also did not share too much of the conversation about it’s removal, or if it was reshaped when they brought it back.

Even with these odd hiccups it is still an overwhelmingly charming little film about murder. It is hard to deny that this cast sold the hell out of this movie and you will leave in love with everyone on screen. Each single actor gets at least one MVP moment, and we love to see it. This stops Over Your Dead Body from feeling bloated. It also distracts us from checking our watches when we feel like they should be wrapping it up soon. During the meta ending, I wanted to be annoyed and point out it feels overindulgent. However, they force in even more fun cameos that earn a few more chuckles and make it feel worth it.

This film isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Also, threatening anal rape as a joke and the Harry Potter references make it feel like a much older script. Yet, Over Your Dead Body feels like the spiritual successor to those dark comedies we don’t get as often anymore. As a millennial, it is hard to not have some fun with this one even while wishing a couple of different choices had been made.
