Instead of trying to craft a scary possession film or risk trafficking in cliches, writer/director Jason Sheedy created a horror comedy with his short To Hell with You. A demon and angel go to war over the soul of a young man name Brennan (Andrew Bourne). It makes for one entertaining watch.

Initially a demon by the name of Doyle (Brett Brooks) possesses Brennan, causing him to spew black goo in the opening minutes. However, an angel, complete with white wings and played by Erin Ownbey, absolutely refuses to allow Doyle to take Brennan to hell. Thus begins the war over the mortal’s soul. Oh, and somehow, the demon and angel know each other. In fact, like Lucifer, Doyle was once a well-known angel, before he fell and became, well, a demon.

This short works so well because of the performances by the three leads. Brooks really gives his horned demon personality. His gravely-voiced performance calls to mind Michael Keaton’s portrayal of Beetlejuice. The short also weaves comedy and horror like Tim Burton’s iconic feature. Ownbey plays the noble angel well. Bourne comes across as quite innocent. He even wants to ensure his mother (Claire Christie) eventually goes to heaven to be with his father. In fact, he’s willing to trade his own soul to make that happen. However, Esme isn’t willing to just give him over to Doyle.

The special effects look really good. There’s the opening scene where Brennan vomits black goop, but there’s a later possession scene that looks especially great. The practical effects, in the few moments they’re evident, go far in enhancing this film and adding dashes of horror atop of the laughs. This short leans into comedy more than it does horror, but it works just fine.

I wouldn’t mind seeing this angel and demon war with each other in a feature length film over Brennan’s soul or other souls. To Hell with You avoids possession cliches and has a lot of heart and laughs. Who knew watching someone stuck in limbo could be so much fun?
