Netflix has just announced their plan to take international Best-Seller The Three-Body Problem, and its two sequels, and adapt them into an original series.

The book’s premise may seem familiar – the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization. This is a tale that has been told and re-told. However, in Liu Cixin’s story, science fiction and fiction elegantly intertwine, producing a story that feels realistic and plausible. It explores the idea of the vulnerability humanity feels as a result of life external to Earth, and how that vulnerability is a force that can simultaneously unify and divide.

The creative team assembled to produce this new series is unified under their shared passion for the book series and their ambition to bring this remarkable story to visual life for audiences all over the world. David Benioff & D.B. Weiss (Game of Thrones), and Alexander Woo (True Blood), Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman (Looper, Knives Out, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Last Jedi), have all signed on as executive producers. This team of experienced industry professionals is no stranger to tackling ambitious projects, sagas, epics, and book-to-film adaptations.

Series author Liu Cixin has signed on as a consulting producer alongside Ken Liu, who penned the English translation for The Three-Body Problem and Death’s End. Their presence on the creative team ensures that the spirit of the original text is maintained during the adaptation.

“I have the greatest respect for and faith in the creative team adapting The Three-Body Problem for television audiences,” said author Liu Cixin. “I  set out to tell a story that transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures and races; one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole. It is a great honor as an author to see this unique sci-fi concept travel and gain fandom across the globe and I am excited for new and existing fans all over the world to discover the story on Netflix.”
