Peuriscope comes from the twisted mind of 29 year old french director Kevin Mendiboure. Twisted in a good way. His newest project will make you question streaming live and where you do it from.
Salyma is a 25 year old model who is shooting in NYC. While she stays in her New York City hotel she decides to Peuriscope to keep her fan up to date with her whereabouts. She thinks she is safe in her hotel room but her fans tell her otherwise.
The short film introduces Salyma as she reads her fans comments and live chats with them. We are on-lookers to the tragedy that is about to happen. It’s almost as if you were stalking your favorite celebrity crush only this one turns out not to be so innocent of a crush.
As Salyma’s fans watch her they notice a figure in the background, her fans warn her but as she inspects her surrounding she comes to the conclusion that her fans are joking around with her. Her fans continue to press on about the grave situation. Salyma hears a noise and that is when she realizes her fans might just be right. Because sometimes you can not trust social media with this type of things, right? She looks in the direction of the sound, but when she looks in the other direction, the person/entity yells at her and she screams in terror. The End.
From the beginning you knew where this was headed, especially if there is a young attractive model alone in her hotel room live chatting with strangers, but what I liked about it is that it sent the simple message that you really can’t trust who you chat with. You can not trust them when they are trying to warn you because people can be hateful and want to make jokes but you can’t trust them because they can also end up being your stalkers.
The atmosphere of the short feels like you are expecting things to go bad, which they do, but the director did it in a way that did not need the help of omniscient music scores. It was just quiet noise, camera sound, typing and I think that is the best type of impending doom music. The typing could have been a bit lower in volume and in-sync but it did not hurt the over all creepiness of the film. The ending scene was terrifying because you did not know if it was a human or something else.
Everyone should reconsider where they stream from, just a suggestion.
