In a landmark move for cult cinema, Severin Films has partnered with The Russ Meyer Charitable Trust to restore and release several of the late filmmaker’s most influential works. This collaboration marks the first time films such as Vixen, Supervixens, and Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens will be mastered from their original negatives since the early 1980s.
Russ Meyer, often hailed as a groundbreaking auteur, left an indelible mark on American cinema with his unique vision. After his passing in 2004, the fate of his extensive film catalog remained uncertain, with many of his works becoming increasingly difficult to access. Severin Films, known for its dedication to restoring cult classics, approached Janice Cowart, Meyer’s longtime executive assistant and the last remaining Trustee of The Russ Meyer Charitable Trust, with a proposal to bring these films back to the public in their original quality.
David Gregory, co-founder and CEO of Severin Films, highlighted the importance of this project, stating, “Russ Meyer is one of the last great icons of American cinema. We’re honored to be working with The Russ Meyer Trust and are excited to restore these legendary titles for a new generation of fans.”
Janice Cowart expressed her satisfaction with the partnership, adding, “Russ Meyer’s biggest requirement was quality, and we are thrilled that Severin Films is dedicated to meeting that high standard.”
The restored films will include newly curated archival special features, offering fans a deeper look into Meyer’s creative legacy. This partnership aims to preserve the work of a filmmaker who has been described as a maverick, a visionary, and a key figure in American independent cinema.
