The Mightier Than the Sword Awards at Sunset Film Festival, founded by Asheboro native Tyler “Ty Bru” Brueilly in 2024, returns for its second year with an expanded four-day schedule. The festival culminates in special performances and screenings featuring Richard and Anastasia Elfman at the historic Sunset Theatre in Asheboro’s downtown district.

Brueilly, the festival’s director, emphasized the impact of Richard Elfman’s creative legacy, including his foundational role in The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo and its influence on film and music. “Richard’s work laid the groundwork for what became the iconic collaboration between Danny Elfman and Tim Burton,” said Brueilly.

Festival attendees can look forward to a screening of Bloody Bridget, a horror-comedy starring Anastasia Elfman, who will also perform on stage before the film. This marks the film’s encore showing at the festival, following a successful festival circuit where it won awards at 22 events globally.

“I hope to leave audiences entertained and inspired by an original aesthetic vision,” said Anastasia Elfman, reflecting on her passion for quirky and offbeat storytelling.

Richard Elfman’s 1980 cult classic Forbidden Zone will also be featured, accompanied by performances of songs such as Some of These Days and Pico & Sepulveda by local musicians. Richard, known for his candid personality, shared his excitement about southern hospitality, local cigars, and barbecue, as well as his ambition to produce Forbidden Zone 2.

The festival will host a cigar night on January 10, 2025, at Leo’s Whiskey Bar, featuring collaborations with Michael’s Cigars. The event will take place under tents and heaters along North Street, offering guests a unique taste of Asheboro.
