Isn’t it bad enough what the 50 Shades series has done to the BDSM community as a whole? Apparently there are even more embarrassing depictions of it, and one of them is apparently a soon-to-be feature.
Panther Ridge is essentially what a hardcore Christian’s idea of BDSM is like–no pleasure, or sex, or consent, or tools and toys. The short film follows the story of a girl named Vera and her first time doing a BDSM scene on camera, while her scene partner enthusiastically tortures a couple. By torturing, I mean pulling out teeth, decapitation, and throat slitting, amongst other delightful activities that people seem to think the community partakes in on a regular basis.
To be fair, this film made it very clear what its intentions were from the get-go: to dress up two girls in outfits that looked more like sexy Edward Scissorhands costumes than actual fem-dom garb, and watch as they torture people for five minutes. (And wearing those black dresses with white bras? Tsk tsk, girl.) Vera seems guilty at first to partake in shooting a snuff film, but doesn’t even hesitate to lop off a guy’s head with a machete? Maybe the character found her calling, maybe the actress was given nothing to work with.
I understand that “Panther Ridge” is only a scene from what is going to become a feature-length film, but what else could this film entail? This one scene alone tells us that its ambition lies in becoming a hit with the edgelords rather than telling a compelling story.
You might as well spend the next 90 minutes of your time watching A Serbian Film, since this is basically a no-budget, badly-lit ripoff of an already grueling faux-snuff film. The suit-clad asshole rolling the camera on this poor couple is just two stiffys away from suggesting infant porn, but I have a feeling that the director of “Panther Ridge”–who is previously known for his extremely successful body-horror short “White Willow”–can do better than that.
