Yes, Foo Fighters made a horror movie. Well, a horror-comedy, really, that features everything that you would expect from this legendary band. The band members all play themselves, of course. Frontman Dave Grohl leads
Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Rami Jaffee, Chris Shiflett, and beloved Pat Smear in a devilish story of artistic vision assisted by diabolical, demonic diatribes and doings. The film is directed by BJ MCDONNELL, and features appearances by such notable comic actors as Jeff Garlin, Whitney Cummings, Leslie Grossman, and Will Forte along with a few super cool surprises we won’t give away.
This is a broad horror-comedy that follows the band as they attempt to record their 10th album in a storied haunted house in the Hollywood Hills. The humor is silly, the kills are copiously bloody, and everyone seems to be having a great time.
We had the chance to connect with most of the Foo Fighters (minus Pat) via a round table interview in anticipation of their first feature film. Situated in what looked like the updated set of Wayne’s World, Grohl, Hawkins, Mendel, Jaffee, and Shiflett faced a cordial court of questions from enamored Press (HorrorBuzz included because, dude, FOO FIGHTERS).
Why a horror comedy though? As Grohl explained to our group, “I think that if you tell someone The Foo Fighters made a horror film, they’d just immediately laugh.” In fact, the roll-out of the film didn’t go as planned either. While they recorded their previous album they began spreading rumors that the house that they recorded in was haunted in hopes that the new album would release in time with the film. Yeah, the Pandemic had other plans and the pic had to be released later.
Some of the kills in the movie are pretty spectacular and while Grohl admits that he envisioned killing his bandmates many times, these kills were far more cinematic. As for horror influences, Grohl said, ” I think the premise of the mov ie is filled with and taken from some really classic horror elements. Like, you’re in the house with the portal to hell in the basement, It’s very Amityville Horror. Someone becomes possessed and starts murdering everyone, that’s very Excorcist. There’s a group of people and someone has lost their mind, it’s very Shining.” Grohl continues, “You know, there’s chainsaws…” Hawkins interupts, “It’s a composite. And then all the 80’s slasher movies that we grew up watching when we were kids.” Hawkins continues, “It seems like one of the goals with the kills was to make them as gory as fuckin’ possible.” Grohl added, “In the Sequel, we gotta double down.”
While the film featured an all-star cast of comedic actors and cameos we had to know how any of them got involved and if the Foo Fighters had a favorite. Grohl steps right up and happily, admits that he had a favorite. But, how did they all get involved?. Grohl explains “Pretty much everyone in the movie, we just texted them, ‘Hey. We’re making a horror film. Do you wanna be in it?’ But the craziest one is John Carpenter.” Grohl continued, “Our lighting guy, Dan, went out on tour with John Carpenter as his lighting guy when he was out performing his music in front of audiences. So when we told Dan we were making a horror movie, Dan said ‘Oh you should email John Carpenter and see if he’ll make a cameo.” Grohl admits that he thought there was no chance. Then Carpenter agreed not only to make a cameo but to write the theme music to it as well.
One of the more humorous aspects of STUDIO 666 though is the very Scooby-Doo feel it has. In one scene, Pat Smear is in his pajamas. Not regular PJ’s, but the full men’s nighttime gown and cap. We had to know who made that decision. “The thing about Pat is that he really is dressed like he’s in a Scooby-Doo episode there.”
Overall, we expect that if you like horror, and you like the Foo Fighters, you’re gonna like STUDIO 666. These are musicians having a good time, being silly, being scary, and reveling in the gore. In closing, Grohl commented on the band’s acting chops by explaining “It isn’t Method acting, it’s Meth-head acting.”
YOu can see for yourself when STUDIO 666 Arrives in theaters February, 25th.
