The Shade, an award-winning independent horror film, has been picked up for North American distribution by Level 33 Entertainment. Starring Chris Galust (Give Me Liberty, Mending the Line) and Tony Award-winner Laura Benanti (tick, tick… BOOM!, No Hard Feelings), the film is slated for an exclusive theatrical release across several hundred screens in the U.S. and Canada on September 20, 2024, followed by a digital release.
The Shade marks the feature debut of writer/director Tyler Chipman and was produced by David Purdy under the Red King Cinema banner. Founded in 2019, Red King Cinema is a new company focused on developing and distributing unique and exciting content for the independent film market.
The film delves into themes of mental health, family dynamics, and generational trauma. It follows twenty-year-old Ryan Beckman (Chris Galust) as he grapples with the tragic loss of his father. Living with his mother Renee (Laura Benanti) and caring for his younger brother James (Sam Duncan), Ryan’s world begins to unravel when his older brother Jason (Dylan McTee), a collegiate athlete, returns home unexpectedly, haunted by an unspeakable darkness. As a mysterious entity starts stalking Ryan, he must confront this malevolent force before it tears his family apart.
“We’ve always envisioned Red King as a vehicle for telling stories as honestly as possible, regardless of how complex the subject matter might be. We look for new ways to blur genre lines to shine a light on important topics, and we think The Shade is the perfect film to introduce our brand of cinema to the world,” said David Purdy, co-founder of Red King Cinema.
The Shade will hit the big screen on September 20, 2024.
