Ah, yes, it is the most wonderful time of the year. Trimming up the tree, drinking egg nog, and spending time with family. Most people love Christmas. As an eternal horror fan, Halloween has always been more of my thing, but I most certainly see the appeal. Shiny lights, yummy food, and presents. Sure, that sounds nice. Add a demonic Santa kidnapping children to hunt in the black forest, and you’ve got yourself a fun holiday! The Wild Hunt has begun!

The Wild Hunt is the story of Maggie (Tess Clarke) on the search for her sister, Beatrice (Charlotte Wallis). Beatrice was kidnapped two years prior by the legendary Woden (James Kay, voiced by Jack Frank) for his annual Christmas time hunt. Maggie fears no death and will stop at nothing to bring her sister home. It’s an exciting concept. They are putting a modern spin on old Christmas folklore. Unfortunately, the film leaves too many unanswered questions. How does Maggie know Woden took Beatrice? How does Maggie know who Woden is? How does Maggie know what The Hunt is? And on that note, what is The Hunt? What are they hunting? Why are they hunting? These questions are never answered, leaving its viewers unsatisfied. If we don’t know what the stakes are and why anything is even at stake, then what exactly is the point? And if our actors don’t believe in what they are saying, then how can it’s viewers? They were reciting lines, not feeling them.

But there are reasons to watch this eerie tale of Yuletide terror. First, the credits original written song is breathtakingly beautiful. Written by Poppy WS, I honestly had to rewind the credits three times to hear it again and again. It’s hauntingly stunning. I can’t get enough of it. Another reason to watch The Wild Hunt is it’s impressive special FX make up on Woden and subtle scarring on Reinhold (Carys Jones). Excellent work.

The Wild Hunt ends on a cliffhanger, and I must say this: I hope they continue it. I hope they answer the questions above. I hope they add more horror, more makeup, and bring this story to the next level. It has everything going for it, but without the above questions answered – It leaves its viewers feeling empty.

I give The Wild Hunt 5 out of 10 jingle bells for beautiful music, lovely special fx, and an unfinished story that needs its completion.
