It’s far off from being Father’s Day, but the horror film, Welcome to the Circle, is a supernatural thriller centered around a father-daughter relationship, written and directed by documentarian turned horror filmmaker David Fowler. A Canadian cult film, it looks to be psychological, deadly, and mind-bending in its creepy illusions. The film stars Heather Doerksen (Pacific Rim), Matthew MacCaull (Star Trek Beyond), and Taylor Dianne Robinson (Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn).
Synopsis: A young girl and her father fall prey to a secluded, madman-worshiping cult situated deep in the woods. Trapped in a maze of demented mind games and deadly supernatural rituals, their only chance of survival seems an impossible task: escape The Circle.
The Islanders of the Wicker Man (1973) and other such famously creepy movie cults, look to have some stiff competition! Wide-eyes welcoming a newcomer into the fray, plastic smiles, positive words of affirmations — Welcome to the Circle looks positively terrifying. Some of the imagery looks supernatural, which will add an unsettling element all on its own, but with instances of bloodsoaked clothes and shivering captives, this film seems like it will have some slasher film elements as well — cult sacrifices, I’m sure. Heavy psychological play with impossible optical illusions and the uncanniness of mannequins; jump scares look like they will be rampant, which often feels like a cheap horror ploy to me, but the sinister plot of violence masked in a religious following will hopefully add weight and merit to the film. I imagine if you were a fan of another Candian psychological cult film, Silent Hill (2004), that this movie will be worth a watch.
Produced by High Deaf Productions and distributed by Devilworks, the occult film, Welcome to the Circle, will be released in 2020. For more information and to follow its expected release date/availability, visit the film’s website or stay tuned to HorrorBuzz.com.
