Adorable Humans, a Danish horror anthology reimagining the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen as horror stories, will make its worldwide streaming debut on August 31. The film arrives on iTunes/Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and Google TV globally, with additional availability on regional platforms Blockbuster, SF Anytime, and Rakuten in Scandinavia.

The film is made up of four interconnected stories set in contemporary Denmark, each drawing from Andersen’s source material and each centering on characters confronting forces — supernatural and psychological — that they cannot outrun. A young woman’s fresh start is derailed by a cursed enchanted mirror. Her psychiatrist is struck by horrifying visions of a catastrophic accident. A care worker uncovers something deeply wrong as he tends to a dying man. A musician’s writer’s block turns demonic. The segments are united by a shared preoccupation with fate, loss, and the darkness buried in stories that were never as innocent as we were taught to believe.
Marking the 150th anniversary of Andersen’s death, Adorable Humans was directed by four Danish filmmakers working in concert: Anders Jon, Michael Kunov, Kasper Juhl, and Michael Panduro. The cast includes Albert Rudbeck Lindhardt, Mille Maria Dalsgaard, Mie Gren, Peter Høgsbro, Sus Wilkins, Marinus Refnov, Adam Ild Rohweder, and Iben Skau. The film was shot by directors of photography Tobias Scavenius and Fredrik Sundbye, with a score by Ida Nørby.
The production — made for approximately €70,000 ($75,000) — has had a strong international festival run, screening at Fantaspoa (Brazil), Night Visions (Finland), Grimmfest (UK), and Macabro (Mexico), and collecting awards at Feratum (Mexico), Dark Nights (Australia), and the Nordic International Film Festival in New York City.
Adorable Humans premieres globally on August 31.
