BLOCKS, written and directed by Bridget Moloney, is motherhood personified in bright colors and shapes. When a young mother of two starts vomiting up plastic interlocking bricks – you know the kind – her quirky journey to self discovery begins. BLOCKS asks the questions most young mothers ask – who am I now, with children? When did I lose me and just become “mom”? And why is everything a mess all the time?

Claire Coffee is delightful, strong, and believably exhausted as our mom. Perfectly balancing all the facets of womanhood – being a wife, mother, partner, friend… or maybe not so perfect as we all think. Delicate but honest writing touches on so many subjects that most people aren’t ready to discuss – what’s sex like after two kids? Masturbation? How do you stay you when all you are is “mommy”? Claire takes all of this with stride and grace and is a perfect “every mom”. Strong, sexy, and tired. Mark Webber as her husband is exceptionally patient, even as he fumbles with properly supporting his wife through this bizarre chapter of their lives. The chemistry between our two leads is believable without being overwrought – I believed in their relationship wholeheartedly. And I suppose in a way that is the trick of BLOCKS – a nonsensical, bizarro-world story placed in a very real world, with total success. Moloney had a journey to take me on and I willingly followed.

Cinematography by Jake Hossfield and editing by Nicholas Weidner come together with music by Ariel Marx to turn this story into a masterpiece of reality and fantasy blended into one of the most fun rides I’ve been on in a long time. The out-loud laughter that the final frames of this film induced wrapped up this brilliant concept in one perfect thought – if you can’t laugh about the absurdity and insanity of it all – regardless of gender, parenthood, sexuality, creed – then what exactly is the point of it all?
