RuPaul’s DragCon was held this weekend at the Los Angeles Convention Center bringing in throngs of drag artists, cosplayers, and fans of the wonderful world of dress-up. Spearheaded by RuPaul and World of Wonder Productions, RuPaul’s DragCon provides a platform for fans – of all ages and backgrounds – to meet and interact with world-renowned celebrities and icons in a friendly and accessible environment.
The two day event featured over 200 vendors and exhibitors, panel discussions, screenings, and photo opportunities. There was also a crap-ton of shopportunities for those looking for unique and custom shoes, apparel, art and many other fabulous products.
In addition to booths on the convention floor, there was also a wide array of programming, including, Q&A sessions with drag stars and icons, lip sync contests, drag herstory discussion groups, and fashion, make-up and styling work shops, for men and women. Our very dear friends, Peaches Christ hosted a screening of the 90’s cult classic, Jawbreaker. On hand was the films hilarious writer, director, Darren Stein.
Much like the horror community, the drag world is about living the reality within. “RuPaul’s DragCon is the place to find your tribe,” said RuPaul. “For all the super creative and super sensitive people out there who live in world that says that you’re too much or that you don’t fit in, DragCon says ‘Welcome home, baby.’” Ru’s words rang true as everyone of every single shape and size, every gender, every identity, strolled the aisles and the halls of the convention with pride and love.
Today we share some of the STUNNING looks we came across while visiting this increasingly popular party.
Of course the stars from RuPaul’s Drag race were on hand too.
“The biggest surprise from last year’s DragCon was how much of a family event this is. Whether your family is San Francisco’s legendary drag queens, Sisters for Perpetual Indulgence, or you’re a tween girl superfan visiting with your Mom & Dad, there’s something for everybody at RuPaul’s DragCon,” said World of Wonder co-founder, Randy Barbato. Family friendly it is. In fact, there is a palpable sense of community and support. Everyone is encouraged to be themselves, to bring out the inner queen and come alive.
No T, no shade, no pink lemonade, RuPaul’s DragCon was a gloriously fabulous, audacious celebration of the art of drag and the spirit of individuality.
