Having wrapped up its first season this past July, the new AMC series, NOS4A2, received high praise for its descent into horror and its dark atmosphere, earning it the green light for another 10 episodes in its upcoming second season. Before its anticipated 2020 return, AMC Networks’ RLJ Entertainment will release Season 1 to Blu-ray and DVD October 22nd, 2019 for fans and newcomers to sink their teeth into.
Synopsis: “Vic” McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings) is a young artist who one day discovers that she is a Strong Creative — someone with a supernatural ability to find lost things. Though at first she is a reluctant hero, Vic comes to use this ability while going up against Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto), a 140 year old supernatural villain who feeds off the souls of children and then deposits what remains of them into “Christmasland” — a twisted place of Manx’s own machinations where every day is Christmas and unhappiness is against the law. Vic strives to rescue his victims without losing her mind or falling victim to him herself.
Based upon the popular book series by “Joe Hill” King (yes, son of Stephen and Tabitha King; horror novel royalty), NOS4A2 is a horror-thriller series with a tense and unsettling plot brought to life by its brilliant actors. The show stars one of my favorites, Zachary Quinto, who long ago impressed me in the TV series Heroes as psychopathic baddie Sylar, and who returns — from stints on American Horror Story and JJ Abrams’ Star Trek universe — to a new villainous role as (yet another supernatural drainer of life-forces) Charlie Manx. NOS4A2 also stars Ashleigh Cummings (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries) as Victoria “Vic” McQueen who is essentially Manx’s “Van Helsing”, as well as Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (True Detective) as Bing Partridge, Manx’s serial killer progeny who I would liken to a Renfield type character (of Dracula). NOS4A2’s Season 1 DVD and Blu-ray include the following bonus features:
- A Look at the Series
- Meet the Characters
- Becoming Charlie Manx
- The Making of NOS4A2
- Adapting the Book
- The Rules of NOS4A2
- Joe Hill on the Themes and Inspirations of NOS4A2
- Joe Hill’s Show and Tell
NOS4A2 is a twisted, psychological narrative where the precarious nature of childhood and family relationships are explored. It has a supernatural world full of good and evil characters to delve into, a fresh take on vampirism with soul-sucking instead of blood-sucking, and dark humor. A horror-thriller like this could only be done by AMC, who has made a name for itself as an Emmy Award-winning basic cable network that frequently has horror or otherwise dark and gritty content. RLJE Films will release AMC’s highly acclaimed venture, NOS4A2, to DVD for an SRP of $39.98 and on Blu-ray for an SRP of $44.98 for its Season 1 content.
