Sometimes, you wish to feel pure terror as your heart races and your skin warms to the sweat and goosebumps after watching a terrifying film; other times, you might want to just have a good laugh. Depending on your mood, you may or may not want to watch The Haunting Lodge.

Directed by Kendall Whelpton and Vera Whelpton, The Haunting Lodge is your run-of-the-mill ghost-hunting film. As you would expect, this consists of all the basic tropes found in a standard ghost-hunting show or movie. Investigators looking for cold spots, EMF readings, random interviews, etc. Going from mundane to off the walls. To give this film credit, there were moments that felt different, but many more that did not.

While watching, I immediately knew this was the type of film you’d watch with your partner or friends for a good hearty laugh. From unnecessary long pauses to consistent inconsistency, there was very little to take seriously. I often found myself stunned in disbelief at the ludicrous nature of the film. Other times, I couldn’t help but laugh vehemently. However, it was evident that comedy was not a central tenant in Kendal’s vision. Which does not bode entirely bode well.

Depending on the viewer’s intention, this film may be entertaining or insufferable. However, thankfully, The Haunting Lodge only nets in a total runtime of 1 hour. As with this conclusion, I cautiously recommend watching this with friends, but not alone.

Oh, also, it includes a mini-documentary about Native Americans. Well, kind of, if you’re into that kind of thing.
