Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for River, the slasher debut from writer-director Joshua Giuliano, ahead of its theatrical release on January 15, 2027.
The sun is down, the boat is dead, there is no cell service, and someone is standing on the shore, staring. River follows estranged siblings who reunite in their rural hometown after their father’s death. They set out to scatter his ashes at his favorite spot on a remote river, only for the trip to become a fight for survival as a disturbing masked figure hunts them.
Jane Levy (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead), Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day, Pulse), and Max Mattern (Cape Fear, Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy) play the siblings. Dane DiLiegro (Prey, Only Murders in the Building) plays the masked killer.
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster acquired the film following a rapturous screening in the Midnight Madness program at the Toronto International Film Festival. It is produced by Steven Schneider (executive producer of the Insidious franchise and Split) through Spooky Pictures, along with Nick Antosca (creator of the Cape Fear series, Verity) and Alex Hedlund (executive producer of the Cape Fear series, Verity) through Eat The Cat. The studio bills it as coming “from the producers of Backrooms and Obsession.” Jason Blum is among the executive producers, and the film is presented as a Shudder Original Production in association with Upgrade.
River arrives only in theaters on January 15, 2027.
