Michael Shannon is set to star in Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders, a contemporary psychological horror inspired by The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The film will be directed by John Erick Dowdle from his own screenplay, continuing his creative partnership with producing collaborator Drew Dowdle. Production is scheduled to begin in June 2026.

Fully financed by Anton, the project will be introduced to international buyers at the European Film Market in Berlin, with CAA Media Finance co-representing North American rights. Producers include Sébastien Raybaud, Brandt Wrightsman, Drew Dowdle, and Stuart Manashil.
The film reimagines the story of Doctor Caligari, a traveling mesmerist who moves from town to town with a sleepwalker under his influence, leaving a series of murders behind. When a young woman suspects Caligari’s involvement in her boyfriend’s disappearance, she struggles to convince others of the threat. Dowdle noted that Shannon’s intensity made him a natural choice for the role, emphasizing a creative trust developed through previous collaborations.
An Academy Award–nominated performer, Shannon has built a career across film, television, and stage, with notable appearances in projects ranging from Man of Steel to Nocturnal Animals. His casting signals a modern revisit of one of horror cinema’s earliest touchstones, positioning Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders as a reinterpretation rooted in psychological tension.
