Following its premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, Jorge Thielen Armand’s Death Has No Master (La muerte no tiene dueño) is heading to Fantastic Fest 2026 for its North American premiere. Starring Asia Argento, the slow-burn thriller turns a dispute over a family estate into an increasingly dangerous confrontation involving ownership, class, and a past that refuses to stay buried.

Argento stars as Caro, an expat who returns to Venezuela from Italy following the death of her father. Her plan appears straightforward: sell the aging family estate and its cacao plantation, then move on. Instead, she arrives to discover that the property is already occupied.

Living inside the mansion are Sonia (Dogreika Tovar), a former employee of Caro’s father, and her young son Maiko (Yermain Sequera). Caro initially sympathizes with the pair and agrees to share the house, taking up residence in her parents’ former bedroom while Sonia remains in the main living quarters.

The situation becomes considerably more complicated when Caro learns that Sonia has also been illegally subletting rooms to other tenants.

When Caro announces her intention to sell the property and asks the occupants to leave, Sonia refuses. She maintains that she has as much right to remain in the home as Caro does, setting off a standoff between the two women.

Attempts to involve local authorities offer Caro little assistance. Sonia and Maiko are familiar members of the surrounding community, and police warn Caro against escalating the dispute. Increasingly frustrated and running out of options, Caro eventually seeks help from her late father’s former lawyer.

What begins as an effort to pressure the occupants into leaving soon takes a violent turn, forcing Caro to confront more than a simple property dispute. The conflict begins exposing a larger history of dispossession, social inequality, and violence connected to the estate and the country Caro left behind as a child.

Written, directed, and produced by Jorge Thielen Armand, Death Has No Master uses its deteriorating mansion and increasingly tense living arrangement to examine the divides between Caro and the community surrounding her. Her determination to profit from the family property puts her directly at odds with people whose relationship to the estate extends beyond legal ownership.

Alongside Argento and Tovar, the cast includes Yermain Sequera, Jorge Thielen Hedderich, and Arturo Rodríguez. The film is produced by Thielen Armand, Stefano Centini, and Arantza Maldonado.
