Netflix has released the official trailer for Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the latest installment in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Monster anthology series, premiering September 17 exclusively on Netflix. The eight-episode limited series examines the psychology behind one of American history’s most notorious alleged killers — and asks the same question the franchise has always posed: born or made?

“Every season of Monster has been an exercise in understanding the person’s psychology,” said Ella Beatty, who stars as Lizzie Borden. “Are they born or are they made? I knew from the beginning that Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan were really interested in exploring what brings a woman to the point of violence.”

Beatty leads an impressive cast that includes Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Rebecca Hall (The Awakening), Billie Lourd (American Horror Story), Joey Pollari, Sarah Paulson, and Jessica Barden. The series is directed by Max Winkler and Sarah Adina Smith, and written entirely by Ian Brennan.

“The show is exploring a legacy of female rage and reaction to the set of circumstances that they are presented with,” Beatty said.

The Monster anthology has proven to be one of Netflix’s most-watched true crime horror franchises, examining figures like Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez Brothers through a lens that balances horror with social critique. This Lizzie Borden chapter — produced by Murphy, Brennan, Carl Franklin, and an extended team — looks to add her to that roster.
