The dead are truly hopping with life in this short film by Jimmy Lui. The Hopping Dead takes an original approach to the lore of vampires. Forget what you know about vampires because in this film they will not run, fly, or materialize, no ladies and gentlemen, they hop.

Two thieves break into a Chinese business only to stumble upon the terror that is the Chinese jiang shi, a corpse reanimated as a vampire by Chinese black magic that, because of rigor mortis, chases after its victims by hopping.

From beginning to end I was chuckling because when have you ever seen a vampire hop? The two protagonist did a great job at keeping the suspense alive. Once the paper holding the spell fell off the vampire’s forehead, I knew no one was safe. Every corner I found myself looking for the fearsome creature. Once the vampire found his victim, he did not waste time draining him. Blood dripped from the vampire’s mouth down to his feet and it was awesome!

May I just add that Nina, the badass, is truly a badass! The way she is introduced is spectacular. Her physical characteristics are nothing like I have seen before. Those thick bushy eyebrows of hers give me life! It’s always great to see a badass women kick some butt.

The comedy, suspense, and gore come together flawlessly in The Hopping Dead. Jimmy Lui does a great job at giving new life to vampire. Move over Dracula there’s a hopping new vampire in town!
