In the midst of the visual feasts seen at Midsummer Scream 2017, one presentation challenged guests to use their imaginations to bring horror to life instead.

Unbound Productions presented Wicked Lit, an acting troupe that performs live readings of classic horror stories adapted for the stage. The actors are dressed in nothing besides their normal clothes, and do very little on stage besides read from their script. However, Wicked Lit creates an immersive experience based on nothing other than captivating delivery and a viewer’s imagination.

The group gets its name from the content that they perform, which is almost exclusively classic gothic and horror fiction. This year, we were treated to two readings: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, and The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe. An equal amount of humor and drama contributed to an entertaining performance, and ultimately resulted in a refreshing getaway from the calamity of the rest of the convention.

For those of you interested in seeing a future performance, I personally recommend it as a lifelong fan of gothic fiction. It requires patience and a will to use your imagination, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but a challenge is always nice!
