The official trailer and poster have arrived for Above & Below, a survival thriller from director Jesse V. Johnson (Avengement, Thieves Highway) arriving in theaters on July 29, 2026. The film — produced by Spain’s AF Films and distributed worldwide by Capstone Pictures — stars Antonio Banderas alongside Laura Marano, and the setup is as merciless as survival horror gets.
Above & Below follows five friends on what’s supposed to be a dream vacation of diving and parties off the Mexican coast. When the group stumbles across cartel cocaine during a shark dive, they’re attacked at sea — and two of them are forced into a shark cage, sent 30 feet below the surface to retrieve a bag of drugs while armed killers wait above and Great White sharks circle below. Ten minutes of oxygen. No good options.
Banderas plays Burns, a cold-eyed and calculating man of violence who knows the ocean better than most and answers to nobody. Laura Marano and Christina Ochoa co-star, with Timothy V. Murphy, Louis Mandylor, Jess Liaudin, Ryan Bertroche, and Ramiro Alonso rounding out the cast. The film is presented by AURA and comes from the producers of FALL, the 2022 survival thriller that found equally terrible ways to trap its characters.
Johnson has built a rock-solid reputation in action-genre filmmaking, and Above & Below doubles down on the kind of practical-danger tension that makes survival horror work. Cartels, sharks, and a ticking clock — there’s no fat on this premise.
Above & Below opens in theaters on July 29, 2026. Check Fandango and your local listings for showtimes.
