Dropshock Pictures and Moon7 Films have announced a wide theatrical release for Hunting Matthew Nichols, director Markian Tarasiuk’s award-winning supernatural thriller, opening on more than 1,000 screens across the US and Canada on April 10, 2026. The film has already been drawing crowds after debuting on 1,400 screens earlier this week as the “Monday Mystery Movie” (also known as “Scream Unseen”) at major chains including AMC, Regal, and Landmark theatres.

Hunting Matthew Nichols follows Tara Nichols (Miranda MacDougall), an aspiring documentary filmmaker who, two decades after her brother’s mysterious disappearance on Vancouver Island, sets out to finally crack his cold case. When an unsettling piece of evidence surfaces, Tara and her film crew dig into the disturbing circumstances surrounding what happened — and what they uncover is far more terrifying than any of them anticipated.

The film is directed by Markian Tarasiuk and written by Sean Harris Oliver, who also serve as producers alongside Lucy McNulty and Matt Villeneuve. Tarasiuk, a Ukrainian Canadian actor and director, has appeared in over 50 film and television projects, including There’s Someone Inside Your House (Netflix) and Virgin River (Netflix). The cast also includes Ryan Alexander McDonald and Christine Willes. Cinematography is by Justin Sebastian, with editing by Jonathan Mathew.

Hunting Matthew Nichols world-premiered at the Newport Beach Film Festival, played Blood in the Snow, and was nominated for the Borsos Award for Best Canadian Feature Film at the Whistler Film Festival. The film earned awards throughout the festival circuit, including Best Found Footage Film and Best Director at FilmQuest and Blood in the Snow, and Best Actor at the Nightmares Film Festival.

“A sneaky, simmering take on the true crime folk horror genre that boils over and becomes truly unnerving,” said Steven Soderbergh.

Ahead of the wide rollout, the film plays a special event screening at The Park in Vancouver on April 2, 2026, and a Film Independent screening at the Landmark Sunset in Los Angeles on April 6 at 7:30 PM. The wide theatrical release kicks off April 10 at AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark, Marcus Theatres, B&B Theatres, Cineplex, and Landmark Cinemas across North America.
