Writers looking to break into the horror industry will soon have another opportunity to showcase their work as the Killer Shorts Horror Competition opens for submissions on June 6, 2026. Since launching in 2019, the competition has focused on connecting emerging genre writers with producers, managers, and industry professionals actively seeking new horror projects.

For its latest season, Killer Shorts is expanding beyond its established short script, one-page script, and short story categories by introducing a new feature-length screenplay division. The addition marks a significant step for the competition and offers writers a chance to compete for a Feature Category Grand Prize that includes a $5,000 cash award provided by Deep Cuts Coffee, along with a guaranteed script review from Bellevue Productions literary manager John Zaozirny.
The competition’s finalists will be reviewed by an industry jury that includes notable names from across horror film, publishing, and production. Among those participating are Barbara Crampton, Tananarive Due, John Zaozirny, Lucas Ford, John Squires, Sophie Carroll, Gigi Saul Guerrero, and Aaron B. Koontz.
Killer Shorts has also highlighted several success stories from previous seasons. Past finalists Vanessa Võ and Kelly Nugent both secured professional representation following their participation in the competition, demonstrating the event’s focus on helping writers build industry connections.
Another avenue for exposure comes through The Scream List, a tracking board available to screenplays receiving a “Recommend” rating through competition coverage. The list is monitored by several genre-focused companies seeking new material.
In addition to cash prizes, winners and finalists can receive industry circulation opportunities, career consultations, Final Draft 13 software licenses, Shudder memberships, and the competition’s custom Killer Trophy.
Submissions open worldwide on June 6, 2026, through the Killer Shorts website as well as Scrybe, Stage 32, FilmFreeway, and Network ISA. Writers interested in participating can review category requirements, prizes, and submission details through the competition’s official channels. As Killer Shorts expands into feature screenplays, the competition continues to offer emerging horror storytellers a pathway to industry exposure and professional development.
