A new trailer for The Exorcist: Martyrs offers a look at the next chapter in the iconic horror franchise, with Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson leading a cast assembled by writer and director Mike Flanagan. The supernatural crime thriller follows a New York City detective whose investigation into a new killer uncovers a disturbing connection to a case she thought was long behind her.

Johansson stars as Detective Julie Miller, who became a hero 13 years ago after ending the reign of satanic serial killer Father Sunday. Now, when a killer scrawls her name in an altar boy’s blood on the walls of a church crypt, Miller is forced to confront the darkness surrounding the case once again.

With help from former prison chaplain Father William (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and rookie detective Gina Restrepo (Sasha Calle), Miller begins investigating a lineage of serial killers that connects figures such as H.H. Holmes and the Zodiac. As the case unfolds, she discovers that the threat may extend well beyond the mortal world.

The film features an ensemble cast that includes Diane Lane as Miller’s mother, Mary; Jacobi Jupe as her son, Max; Scoot McNairy as paroled convict Clay Silver; Gil Bellows as former Father Sunday follower Peter Nicks; Laurence Fishburne as Father Nichol; and John Leguizamo as Father Sunday.

Flanagan, known for horror projects including The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, and Doctor Sleep, writes and directs the new film. The Exorcist: Martyrs is based on characters created by William Peter Blatty and produced by David Robinson, Jason Blum, and Flanagan.
