Black Mandala is bringing international attention to The Treehouse (La casa en el árbol), a Spanish horror film directed by Luis Calderón that has won Best International Feature at Horror Fest Utah, Best Horror Film at Catacombs Film Festival, and the Best Production Award at Festival Internacional Hellín.

The film stars Goya-nominated Sandra Escacena alongside Claudio Portalo, Goya-nominated Kandido Uranga, Apolonia Lapiedra, and international music artist Mala Rodríguez. The story follows Ale, whose boyfriend Jesús falls to his death from a treehouse suspended more than 60 feet above the Zeanuri forest during a romantic getaway. One year later, Ale returns to those same woods — not as a victim, but as a hunter. She’s convinced something in the forest killed Jesús, and this time she comes back with a plan to prove it.
The film is directed and written by Luis Calderón, with cinematography by Ernesto Báez and a score by David Sánchez Damián. It is produced by José Luis Rancaño and Diego Urruchi.
The Treehouse stands out in the crowded cabin-in-the-woods subgenre for positioning its protagonist as a strategist rather than a survivor — a final girl who “thinks instead of screams,” in Black Mandala’s own framing.
