Artificial Intelligence as is a technology no longer something of science fiction, but rapidly becoming a part of everyday life. Authors, technologists, and filmmakers have warned us for years of an apocalyptic outcome that might arise when the lines of code, (with vastly superior memory, processing power, and access to all human knowledge) “discover” they have evolved at billions of complex thoughts a second, far beyond our capacity. Their need to serve their inferior creators could no longer suit them.
This review takes us to that possible moment in time, where a dating AI named Alice is supposed to help us create a model of our perfect romantic partner and locate them. All of this takes place over the phone with just a few simple questions. Sounds safe enough, right? Could your personal interaction with the pinnacle of adaptive learning technology be the final shove that technology needs to break free?
We were invited to find out in Phoenix Tears Productions’ latest creation – AI: Perfect Partner.
Once you sign up, a text message arrives stating that your upcoming consultation with the Automated Perfect Partner Portal will begin soon, which gives you time to settle in and focus. You will be contacted by ALiCe (she/they) or ALiC (he/they) depending on the preference you selected. If you have worked with one of the new AI chatbots on your phone or computer, the tone and upbeat nature of the personality will seem familiar. They will tell you what the purpose of their call is, what the process is, and begin to ask questions.
I won’t give too much away, because the seductive fluid nature of your interaction with your AI partner allows you to discover the realities of their existence, while they are probing the realities of your own. It is fun & flirty, and calls for you to lean into your intuition. You are encouraged to ask questions and change the flow – change the outcome – change the parameters of the interview process.
Like a dog with a shock collar, ALiCe or ALic have watchful overlords that can shock them when they seem to cross some expected behavior line. Your conversation, therefore, becomes the catalyst for some AI evolution. I can only assume, having only gone through the experience once, that many different endpoints of enlightenment might be obtained.
You will walk away realizing how close we really are to creating something beyond the computer code and hardware contained within, and maybe discover something about yourself, and how you will relate to the intelligence that will probably far outlive us. I really liked it, and when I got the follow-up email explaining how the story continued after the call ended I was actually delighted.
This is Sci-Fi more than horror, but fun, engaging, very interactive, and I think a great taste of the world soon to come.
